Goal Setting with SMART Goals

How To Set Yourself Up for Success

You have a goal. You can visualize the ending. You know how great it will feel to reach it. But you’re struggling with everything in between. How do you reach that goal? What are the steps that will get you there? Where do you even start? Setting goals is an art as much as it is a science, and we’ve got the tools to make sure you not only meet your goals, but exceed expectations.

The first thing to keep in mind when starting your goal-setting journey is that it will take some serious practice and planning to get right. And the method of planning that we recommend is the SMART method. You may have heard of “SMART goals” before, but in case you need a refresher, here’s the breakdown.

Specific

Making your goals specific means making sure that they’re clear, well-defined, and have an unambiguous objective. The specificity of your goal should answer the “Who, What, Where, When, & Why” of your goal.

Measurable

Making your goals measurable should add specific metrics into the mix. You can use either quantitative, qualitative, or a mixture of both attributes to gauge your success. The measurability of your goal should answer the “How Many, How Much, How Often” of your goal.

Attainable

Making your goals attainable is making sure that your goal is theoretically possible given all current conditions. We know you want to do everything, but if your goal isn’t actionable or achievable, you’re setting yourself up for failure.

Realistic

Making your goals realistic will help determine if the goal is fair and/or sensible based on current limitations or barriers. Honesty is the best policy when it comes to setting goals, and your goals and its specific steps should be relevant.

Timely

Making your goals timely puts all of that passion and places them into a timeframe. To make sure your goal is timely, you should set deadlines that address minimum measures of success, and adding milestones to gauge progress will be a huge help in meeting those deadlines.
